Jute factory “El Cànem”

A comprehensive renovation in Barcelona

The project, led by the b720 studio, is located in the Poble Nou neighborhood, within the complex of the former jute spinning factory owned by the Godó brothers, popularly known as “El Cànem,” which once occupied three entire blocks of the Eixample district.

The façade facing Doctor Trueta Street has been preserved from the existing building and is included in the Architectural Heritage Protection Plan.

The goal was to design a new space that would preserve the essence of the industrial past while incorporating the innovation and design of workspaces required by today’s society: technological, comfortable, sustainable, flexible, healthy, and efficient.

A three-volume structure consisting of a plinth supporting two glass boxes screened by an aluminum latticework reminiscent of jute fiber weaving. The blocks facing the street offer large, open-plan, flexible office spaces thanks to the strategic location of the vertical cores and the post-tensioned concrete structure.

The central block is configured as an addition of smaller duplex offices opening onto the central passageway, reminiscent of old industrial workshops.

The result

New offices that preserve the city’s social and industrial heritage, with a new efficient and technological space covering 8,562 m².

A community of large companies, startups, and entrepreneurs who share a private courtyard, Zen garden, reservable rooftop terrace, bicycle repair station, and wastewater recycling.

The façade

In this project, we were responsible for the design, manufacture, and installation of the façade using our TIMBER INOX CURTAIN WALL system, a self-supporting wooden curtain wall with a double skin of aluminum latticework.
